Village History
How South Blooming Grove Started
The idea for South Blooming Grove to become its own village began in 2004. A group called the South Blooming Grove Homeowner's Association was worried about how fast the nearby Satmar Hasidim village of Kiryas Joel was growing. They wanted to make sure their area could manage its own growth and development.
To do this, they decided to create a new village. They gathered over 1,000 signatures from people who supported the idea. In January 2005, a New York State Supreme Court Justice paused the process for a short time. But finally, on June 29, 2006, the vote to become a village passed by a lot. There were 856 votes for the new village and only 89 against it.
First Village Elections
After becoming a village, South Blooming Grove held its first elections on September 2, 2006. The people running for mayor and the four trustee seats ran without anyone opposing them. This means they were the only ones on the ballot.
- Robert Jeroloman became the first mayor.
- Garry Dugan, Jim Mulany, Dorine Sas, and John Hickey became the first trustees.
These leaders were re-elected several times without opposition. In 2014, Mayor Jeroloman and Trustee Mulany were re-elected. James LoFranco was elected to a trustee seat, taking over from Gary Dugan.
Recent Changes in Leadership
In September 2020, there was a new election. Three candidates supported by the growing Hasidic community in South Blooming Grove won seats on the village's governing board.
Then, in March 2021, candidates also backed by the Hasidic community won the remaining two board seats. This meant that the five-member village board now had four Hasidic members. The mayor, George Kalaj, was not Hasidic but was elected with the support of the Hasidic community.
