South Fork is a place in Elko County, Nevada, in the United States. It is known as a semi-ghost town. This means it used to be a busy community but now has very few or no people living there.

What is South Fork?

South Fork is an unincorporated community. This means it's a place with a group of homes or buildings, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. It's part of a larger county.

A Look Back in Time

People from other places first settled in the South Fork area in 1867. Back then, it was an important stop for stagecoaches. Stagecoaches were like old-fashioned buses that carried people and mail across the country.

South Fork had a large hotel where travelers could rest. However, the hotel closed in 1871. A post office opened in 1874, but it also closed just three years later, in 1877. When businesses like hotels and post offices close, it often means fewer people are living in the area. This is how a place can become a ghost town.

South Fork Today

Even though South Fork is a ghost town, the area is still used and enjoyed today. It is now known as Shepherd's Station. This place is a recreation park.

Visitors can go fishing, hunting, and camping there. It's a peaceful spot for outdoor activities in Nevada.
