South Guthrie is a small, quiet place in Montgomery County, Tennessee. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town. It sits right on the border with Kentucky.

Where is South Guthrie?

South Guthrie is located right next to the city of Guthrie, Kentucky. Think of it as the part of the Guthrie area that is just south of the state line. The main road that goes through this community is U.S. 41.

A Look at South Guthrie's Past

South Guthrie has an interesting history. For a long time, it was a separate community for African-American families. This was during a time in history when communities were often divided by race. The state line helped create a clear boundary between South Guthrie and the nearby city of Guthrie.

The larger community of Guthrie started in 1868. It grew quickly after a railroad junction was finished in 1870. This made it an important place for transportation.

Jobs and Community Life

In the early 1900s, people living in South Guthrie found jobs in local factories. There was a factory that made brooms and another that produced railroad ties. These jobs helped the community grow.

South Guthrie also had a small group of African-American professionals, like teachers or doctors. The community also benefited from African-American tobacco farmers in the surrounding area, known as the "Black Patch" region.

Today, South Guthrie is still mostly a community of black residents. The city of Guthrie is mostly white. While these differences are still there, the strict divisions from the past are not as strong.

Important Buildings in South Guthrie

The building that is now the South Guthrie community center has a special history. It used to be a Rosenwald school. These schools were built for African-American children in the early 20th century. This school was finished in 1922 and taught students until 1968. It is the only one left of 22 Rosenwald schools that were once in Montgomery County.

Another important building is the Guildfield Missionary Baptist Church. It was also built in 1922 and is so important that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special place that is protected because of its history.
