South Hedland is a suburb located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is often called the Port Hedland City Centre. This area is the main business hub for the Town of Port Hedland.
You can reach South Hedland by driving on the North West Coastal Highway and the Great Northern Highway. It is also home to Hedland Senior High School.
History of South Hedland
South Hedland was created because of a big change in Australia. In the 1960s, the Australian government decided to allow iron ore to be sold to other countries. This had been stopped before.
This decision led to a huge increase in mining in the Pilbara area. Many new towns were built to support the mining industry. South Hedland was one of these new towns.
The first plan for South Hedland was based on something called the "Radburn design". This idea was about building neighborhoods around a central area. These areas would have lots of parks and special paths for walking. The goal was to connect homes to shops and other places easily.
However, after the first neighborhood was finished, people living there and government officials did not like the design. They thought it did not work well. So, the Radburn design plan was stopped in 1974. Even though the plan was abandoned, it still influences how the town is laid out today.
