Discovering the Festival's History
The South Padre Convention and Visitors Bureau wanted to bring more visitors to the island during the quieter fall months. So, they decided to host a music festival. They asked different companies to present their ideas, and GamePlan Marketing & Events was chosen to create the event.
The main goal was to make South Padre Island a cool place for music and attract tourists from all over the world. At first, there were ideas to hold concerts on the sand flats near the South Padre Island Convention Centre. However, the festival organizers and the Visitors Bureau decided it would be better to have the concerts closer to local businesses. This way, the festival could help the local economy by bringing more customers to shops and restaurants.
The very first SPI Music Fest took place from November 2 to 4, 2007. The festival was so popular that it returned the next year, from October 31 to November 2, 2008.
