South Padre Island facts for kids
South Padre Island is a long, thin island off the coast of Texas, in the United States. It's known as a barrier island because it protects the mainland from ocean storms. This island is split between two areas: Cameron County and Willacy County. South Padre Island was formed when a channel, called the Port Mansfield Channel, cut Padre Island into two parts. The city of South Padre Island, a very popular place for vacations, is located right on this island.

Discovering South Padre Island
Early Island Life
Long ago, before European settlers came to North America, Native American tribes lived on the island. They were the first people to call this beautiful place home.
First Settlers and Ranching
Later, in the early 1800s, a person named Padre Jose Nicolas Balli started a cattle ranch on the island. He and his family were among the first European settlers. However, they had to leave because of the Mexican–American War. They couldn't return later because of the American Civil War.
Island Development and Growth
For many years, most of the island was protected by the National Park Service. This changed in 1962, when people were allowed to settle there. Newcomers began to build businesses and create a lively economy on the island and in nearby Port Isabel.
By 1978, about 314 people lived on the island. Just ten years later, the population grew to 1,012 people, and there were 111 businesses!
