How the Festival Started

The idea for the Southside Fringe Festival began in 2011. People wanted more music, comedy, and art shows in the south part of Glasgow. This area includes places like Shawlands and Queen's Park. The goal was to have more events happening around May each year.

The very first Southside Fringe Festival happened in May 2013. It was created by a musician named Crawford Smith. He worked with a performer named Corinna Currie. They wanted to bring more local music, comedy, and other shows to venues in the area.

Growing Bigger Each Year

The festival has grown a lot since it started.

  • In 2014, there were 140 different shows. These shows took place in 37 different venues. This was a big jump from 110 shows in 28 venues in its first year.
  • By 2015, the festival had over 170 events. These events were held in 41 different places across Glasgow's Southside.
  • In 2014, the festival also opened a temporary office. This office was on Pollokshaws Road.
  • In February 2015, the festival found a permanent home. It moved into the Govanhill Baths building.
  • By 2016, the festival had grown even more. It featured over 200 events in 50 different venues. The festival also became guests at the Art Village in the Shawlands Shopping Centre.
