Sowerbaea is a small group of flowering plants. These plants are perennial herbs, which means they live for more than two years and have soft stems. All Sowerbaea plants are found only in Australia. This makes them endemic to Australia.

These plants belong to the plant family called Asparagaceae. This family also includes plants like asparagus. They are part of a smaller group within this family called Lomandroideae.

Some Sowerbaea plants grow new parts above the ground each year. They can grow straight up or climb. Their leaves grow in an alternating pattern along the stem. The flowers often grow in groups, like a small umbrella shape called an umbel. Their flowers can be white, pink, or different shades of purple.

Discovering Sowerbaea Plants

The Sowerbaea group of plants was first officially described in 1798. This was done by a scientist named James Edward Smith.

The very first species, Sowerbaea juncea, was described in 1800. Its seeds were grown in England not long after the colony in New South Wales was started. James Smith also described this plant in the same year. However, the description by Andrews was published first, so his name for the plant is the one used.

Another important species, Sowerbaea laxiflora, was described later in 1839. This plant was found growing in Western Australia.

The name Sowerbaea was chosen to honor a person named James Sowerby. He was famous for drawing plants for science books.

Types of Sowerbaea Plants

There are several different types, or species, of Sowerbaea plants. Each one grows in specific parts of Australia. Here are the accepted species:

  • Sowerbaea alliacea - Found in the Northern Territory.
  • Sowerbaea juncea - Also known as vanilla lily or rush lily. It grows in New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, and Victoria.
  • Sowerbaea laxiflora - Often called purple tassels or vanilla lily. This species is found in Western Australia.
  • Sowerbaea multicaulis - Known as the many-stemmed lily. It grows in Western Australia.
  • Sowerbaea subtilis - Found in Queensland.
