Spacex was a special place in Exeter, UK, that showed modern art. It was open from 1974 to 2017. It started as a group of artists working together. Spacex displayed many types of art, like sculptures, paintings, and videos. They also had programs to help people of all ages learn about art. Spacex closed its doors at the end of 2017.
How Spacex Started
Spacex was in an old warehouse from the 1800s. It was near Exeter Cathedral and the quayside. A group of artists started Spacex in 1974. They wanted a place where local artists could work and show their art cheaply.
In the early 1990s, Spacex became a charity. This meant it could get money from the public. It then showed modern art for free. Spacex loved working with artists from all over the world. The Arts Council recognized their important work.
Spacex used to have about five or six art shows each year. Later, they started doing more events. They also let artists use the space in new and different ways.
Learning About Art at Spacex
Spacex wanted everyone to learn about new art. They had special projects and activities. These helped people understand the latest art ideas. Sometimes, they even did art projects outside their building.
Spacex also had a big learning program. They worked with students of all ages. This included kids from local schools. They also worked with older students from colleges and universities.
