Hospital History

How the Hospital Started

University of Michigan Health - Sparrow Lansing began in 1896. It was first supported by the Women's Hospital Association. At that time, it was just one doctor and one nurse working from a rented house.

Building the First Hospital

In 1910, a man named Edward W. Sparrow helped the hospital grow. He was a developer in Lansing. He gave land on East Michigan Avenue for a new building. He also donated $100,000 to help build the hospital. The new hospital building opened its doors in 1912.

Modern Expansions

In 2008, a big new part was added to the hospital. This was a 10-story building called the Sparrow Tower. This addition cost $160 million. It is about 450,000 square feet in size. The Sparrow Tower is where the hospital's emergency departments are located.

The Cancer Center

A special cancer treatment center opened on July 17, 2017. It is called the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center. This building is 132,000 square feet. It is located across Michigan Avenue from the Sparrow Tower. The center offers very advanced cancer treatments. It uses three special machines for radiation treatment. It also has 40 bays for chemotherapy.

Judi Herbert, a breast cancer survivor, and her husband, Jim, helped fund the center. Dr. James and Susan Herman also donated money. Together, they gave $2.5 million. The cancer center cost $64 million to build. It also has about $600,000 worth of art. This art decorates the walls and ceiling to help patients feel better.
