How the Hospital Started
University of Michigan Health - Sparrow Lansing began a long time ago in 1896. It started with a group called the Women's Hospital Association. They supported just one doctor and one nurse in a rented house.
Building the First Hospital
In 1910, a man named Edward W. Sparrow helped a lot. He gave land in Lansing and $100,000 to build a new hospital. The hospital officially opened its doors in 1912.
Adding the Sparrow Tower
In 2008, a big, new part was added to the hospital. It was a 10-story building called the Sparrow Tower. This addition cost $160 million. It is where the hospital's emergency rooms are located.
The Herbert-Herman Cancer Center
A special place for cancer treatment opened on July 17, 2017. It's called the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center. This center has modern equipment to treat cancer. It also has many comfortable spots for patients to receive chemotherapy. Two families, the Herberts and the Hermans, donated a lot of money to help build this center. They also made sure the center had beautiful art to help patients feel better.
