Sparta is a small, unincorporated community located in Dearborn County, Indiana. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Sparta Township.
A Look Back: Sparta's History
Early Days and Challenges
Sparta got its name from Sparta Township, the larger area it's part of. In 1846, a post office was opened in Sparta, which helped people send and receive mail. However, this post office closed down in 1904.
During the 1840s, Sparta faced a big challenge when a serious illness called cholera spread through the community. This made it harder for the area to grow and develop quickly.
Community Churches
Today, Sparta is home to two churches: Sparta First Baptist Church and South Sparta Church. South Sparta Church was first known as Cold Springs Presbyterian Church and was built in 1889. It still holds church services once a month.
