The Library's Story
Before the current library building was constructed, the Sparta Free Library didn't have a permanent home. It moved around and was housed in several different places in Sparta.
How the Library Was Built
The money to build this beautiful library came from a very famous person named Andrew Carnegie. He was a wealthy businessman who believed that everyone, no matter how much money they had, should be able to read and learn.
Carnegie funded the building of thousands of libraries all over the world. He wanted to give people a chance to educate themselves. The Sparta Free Library is one of these special "Carnegie libraries." It was built in 1902, thanks to his generous gift. The architects who designed this classic-looking building were Schick & Roth.
