Spartanburg is a small place in Indiana, a state in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town. Spartanburg is located in Randolph County, within Greensfork Township.

A Look Back: Spartanburg's History

Spartanburg has an interesting past. It wasn't always called Spartanburg! When the area was first settled in 1832, people knew it by the name of Newberg.

Later, in 1842, a post office opened in the community. This is when the name Spartanburg began to be used. The post office served the area for many years, finally closing its doors in 1907.

The Union Literary Institute

About two miles from Spartanburg, there was a very special school called the Union Literary Institute. This school was founded by a religious group called the Quakers. The Quakers believed strongly in equality for all people.

The Union Literary Institute was unique because it was created to provide education for African-American students. This was especially important during a time when many schools did not allow Black students to attend. It played a big role in offering educational opportunities to those who might not have had them otherwise.
