Spatsizi River facts for kids
The Spatsizi River is a cool river located in British Columbia, Canada. It is a tributary of the Stikine River, which means it's a smaller river that flows into the bigger Stikine River. The Spatsizi River starts near Mount Gunanoot in the southeastern Spatsizi Plateau.
What Does "Spatsizi" Mean?
The name "Spatsizi" comes from the Sekani language. It means "red goat." This name was given because mountain goats in the area sometimes roll around in red dust found on a special mountain. This makes their white fur look red!
Where Does the Spatsizi River Flow?
The Spatsizi River begins near the bottom of Mount Gunanoot. This mountain is part of the Skeena Mountains in the northern part of British Columbia.
From there, the river flows downhill and enters Spatsizi Headwaters Provincial Park from the south. It continues to flow north, leaving the park.
The river then enters a wide valley in the middle of the Spatsizi Plateau. This valley has a flat bottom, which allows the river to curve and wind a lot. It flows mostly northwest until it finally joins the Stikine River inside Stikine River Provincial Park.
