The spectacled dormouse (Graphiurus ocularis) is a small, furry rodent that looks a bit like a squirrel. It's one of only four types of dormice found only in South Africa. Its name comes from the dark rings around its eyes, which look like spectacles or glasses!

What Does It Look Like?
This dormouse has soft fur and a bushy tail, much like a squirrel. It has a short nose and small ears. Its face is a mix of white and grey, with those famous dark rings around its eyes. Its cheeks, belly, and the tops of its paws are white. Its tail often has a white tip too.
Where Does It Live?
The spectacled dormouse lives only in a special area of western South Africa called the Cederberg. You can find it in rocky places, as well as in trees and even around human buildings.
What Does It Do at Night?
This dormouse is nocturnal, which means it is active mostly at night. It is a very good climber and moves quickly and easily through its habitat.
What Does It Eat?
The spectacled dormouse mainly eats seeds and other parts of plants. It also enjoys eating small insects and other tiny creatures without backbones, called invertebrates. Interestingly, these dormice are known to be brave enough to eat certain types of scorpions! They can also be quite protective of their territory.
