Spencer Lee Gettys (born June 8, 1916 – died November 18, 2004) was an American baseball player. He played as a catcher in the Negro leagues during the 1930s. These leagues were professional baseball leagues in the United States. They were made up mostly of African-American players.
Early Life and Education
Spencer Gettys was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina. As a young person, he went to Radnor High School. There, he was a very good football player. After high school, he continued his education at Delaware State University.
Baseball Career
Gettys played professional baseball in 1936. He was a catcher for the Bacharach Giants. The Bacharach Giants were a well-known team in the Negro leagues. He played for them during that year.
Life After Baseball
After his time playing baseball, Spencer Gettys had a long career. He worked as a stonemason. A stonemason is someone who builds things with stone. Later in his life, Gettys decided to go back to school. He earned degrees from two different universities. These were Temple University and Antioch University.
Spencer Gettys passed away in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2004. He was 88 years old.
