This gecko's scientific name, poindexteri, honors a person named James A. Poindexter. He worked at the Smithsonian Museum Support Center in Maryland, USA. Scientists often name new species after people they want to recognize.
Where Does it Live?
The S. poindexteri gecko likes to live in the leaf litter. This means it hides among fallen leaves from certain trees. It prefers leaves from Coccoloba uvifera (also known as sea grape trees) and other hardwood trees. These geckos are found at low altitudes, usually between 3 and 10 meters (about 10 to 33 feet) above sea level.
