The Spiraeoideae was once the name for a group of flowering plants. These plants belong to the large family called Rosaceae, which includes many well-known plants like roses.
Before 2007, the Spiraeoideae group mainly included shrubs and some herbs. These plants typically had small, dry fruits.
Why the Name Changed
In 2007, scientists decided to make the Spiraeoideae group much larger. They added plants that were previously in other groups, like Amygdaloideae and Maloideae.
Then, in 2012, a big meeting called the International Botanical Congress took place. At this meeting, experts decided that the correct name for this much larger group should be Amygdaloideae.
What Plants are in Amygdaloideae Now?
Today, the Amygdaloideae subfamily includes many plants that have juicy, fleshy fruits. This means plants like the apple and the plum are now part of this group.
