Spirit Creek facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Spirit Creek is a small waterway in Saskatchewan, Canada. It flows into the Assiniboine River system, which eventually leads to Hudson Bay. This creek is important to the local area, providing water and supporting the environment around it.

Where Spirit Creek Flows

Spirit Creek starts its journey near a town called Rama, Saskatchewan. From there, it generally flows towards the east. A reservoir, which is like a large artificial lake, is located about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Rama.

The creek then turns south about 2 miles (3.2 km) west of Buchanan. It crosses Highway 5 and a railway line used by CN trains. The creek continues flowing southeast after crossing the railway. It then crosses Highway 754. Finally, it reaches Highway 47, about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Buchanan.

After this, Spirit Creek flows through a place called Patterson Lake. Its journey ends when it empties into the northern part of Good Spirit Lake. Good Spirit Lake is about 10 miles (16 km) south of Buchanan.

The Spirit Creek Dam and Reservoir

The Spirit Creek Dam and its reservoir were built a long time ago, in the 1920s. The Canadian Northern Railway built them for a special reason. In those days, trains were powered by steam. These steam locomotives needed a lot of water to create steam. The dam and reservoir provided a reliable water source for these trains.

Over the years, the ownership of the dam changed. For some time, the Village of Rama managed it. Today, the dam and reservoir are owned by Big Sky industrial pork farms.
