Split Enz was a famous rock band from New Zealand. They were very popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Tim Finn and Phil Judd started the band in 1973. Many other talented musicians joined the group over the years.
Split Enz holds a special record in New Zealand music. Eight of their songs are on the list of the APRA Top 100 New Zealand Songs of All Time. This is more songs than any other band has on that list!
Their albums were also very successful. Ten of their albums, including seven studio albums, made it into the top ten of the Official New Zealand Music Chart. Between 1980 and 1982, they had four albums reach number one in New Zealand. Three of their albums also hit number one in Australia during that time.
Split Enz also found success in other countries. Two of their albums made it into the top ten in Canada. Two albums reached the top fifty on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. One album even made it into the top fifty of the UK Albums Chart in the United Kingdom.
Their only number-one song was "I Got You" in 1980. This song topped the music charts in both New Zealand and Australia. Other popular songs that reached the top ten include "One Step Ahead" (1980), "History Never Repeats" (1981), "Dirty Creature" (1982), and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" (1982).
