Splitlog is named after a man called Mathias Splitlog. He was a member of the Wyandot people, an Indigenous group. Mathias got his name because he learned to be a carpenter when he was a child. He was very good at working with wood.

Building a Business

Mathias Splitlog was known for starting a lumber business in Wyandotte, Kansas. Lumber is wood that has been cut and prepared for building. He was also a very smart person who taught himself to be an engineer. This means he was good at designing and building things.

He also bought and sold land, which is called being a real estate speculator. Plus, he was a businessman in the mining industry in Missouri. Mining is when you dig for valuable minerals or resources from the ground.

Founding the Community

Mathias Splitlog was the one who planned and set up the area where the Splitlog community is today. He "plated the town site," which means he laid out the streets and lots for people to build on.

A post office was opened in Splitlog in 1887. This was a place where people could send and receive letters and packages. The post office stayed open for many years, until 1906.
