What Does It Look Like?
The Sporting Lucas Terrier is a small dog. It has short legs and a narrow chest. This helps it go into small spaces when it is working.
Size and Weight
These dogs are usually about 12 inches (30 cm) tall at the shoulder. They weigh around 15 pounds (6.8 kg).
Coat and Colors
Their fur, called a coat, is rough and shaggy. It can be white with dark patches. You might also see them in different shades of brown, black, and tan. Some have a mix of gray and tan fur, which is called grizzle and tan.
History of the Breed
The Sporting Lucas Terrier was created in Scotland. This happened in the 1990s. A person named Brian Plummer developed the breed. He wanted to make a good working terrier.
How the Breed Started
Brian Plummer used a few different dog breeds to create the Sporting Lucas Terrier. He used the Lucas Terrier, the Jack Russell Terrier, and various Fell Terriers. He started this work in Mey, Caithness, and later in Abington, South Lanarkshire.
The Split from the Lucas Terrier Club
In 1999, something important happened. The original Lucas Terrier Club decided to separate from Brian Plummer's dogs. They did not want other terrier types mixed into their dog's family lines. After this, new clubs were formed for Brian Plummer's dogs. That is how the dog became known as the Sporting Lucas Terrier. Even though it has "Lucas" in its name, its connection to the original Lucas Terrier is not very strong.
The Original Lucas Terrier
The first Lucas Terrier was created much earlier. Major Jocelyn Lucas made it in the late 1940s. He wanted a Sealyham Terrier that could go underground to hunt. He used Sealyhams and Norfolk Terriers to create it. Today, the original Lucas Terrier is mostly a pet and a show dog.
Getting Recognized
For a dog breed to be widely known, it needs to be "recognized" by big dog clubs. These clubs set rules for the breed.
Main Kennel Club Recognition
In countries where English is spoken, only one major club recognizes the Sporting Lucas Terrier. This is the United Kennel Club in the United States. They include it in their Terrier Group.
Other Clubs and Registries
Many other smaller dog clubs and groups also recognize the Sporting Lucas Terrier. These can be clubs for specific dog sports or online registries.
The Sporting Lucas Terrier Club
The main club for this breed is called The Sporting Lucas Terrier Club. It was started in 1999, right after the split from the Lucas Terrier Club.
