The spot-winged threadtail (scientific name: Nososticta kalumburu) is a special kind of damselfly found only in Australia. It belongs to a family of insects called Platycnemididae.
Damselflies are amazing insects. They are often confused with dragonflies, but damselflies are usually smaller and hold their wings together over their body when they are resting. Dragonflies hold their wings out flat.
What Does It Look Like?
The spot-winged threadtail is a small and thin damselfly. Its body is mostly green-black with some brown marks.
Male spot-winged threadtails have a special feature. Their wings have a very clear dark band. This makes them easy to tell apart from the females.
Where Does It Live?
This damselfly has only been found in one place in the world. It lives in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
It likes to live near streams. This is where it finds food and lays its eggs.
