Springdale Farm is a special old farm located on Horseback Road in Burnham, Maine. This farm covers about 100 acres (40 ha) of land. It has a farm complex from the 1870s that is still almost exactly as it was back then. This includes a farmhouse and a barn, all connected together. Springdale Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the year 2000 because of its historical importance.

What Does Springdale Farm Look Like?

Springdale Farm is found in the eastern part of Burnham, which is a quiet, rural town in Waldo County. The farm is currently 100 acres (40 ha) in size. It used to be much larger, about 600 acres (240 ha)! Today, about 60 acres (24 ha) of the land is clear and open, while the rest is covered in trees.

The Farm Buildings and Layout

The main farm buildings are on the east side of Horseback Road. They are about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) south of Troy Road. The buildings are connected in a special way. The main house is at the south end. Long sections, called ells, stretch north from the house to the barn.

There are also other farm buildings. These stand north and east of the barn. You can also find a small "summer sleeping house" south of the main house.

The Farmhouse Style

The main farmhouse has an Italianate style. This means it has certain design features that were popular in the 1800s. For example, it has a fancy roof over the entry supported by brackets. It also has bay windows. These windows stick out from the house and have special flat panels on their corners and bottoms.

Inside, the main part of the house has been updated to be modern. However, the connected ell sections still have some features from the 1800s.

When Was Springdale Farm Built?

We are not completely sure when people first settled on this land. An old map from 1859 shows a house here, owned by someone named C. Reynolds.

The Main House and Barn

The farmhouse we see today looks like it was built later than 1859. It was probably built around 1870. The barn was likely built at the same time. The barn is special because it was made with large, hand-cut wooden beams. It also has a unique roof design called "purlin roof framing." This type of roof is not usually seen on barns this big!

The Reynolds family owned Springdale Farm for a very long time. They kept it in their family until 1977.
