Springfield Lake is a small, beautiful lake located in Middle Sackville, Nova Scotia. It's part of the Halifax Regional Municipality. This lake is special because it gets all its water from underground springs and rainwater runoff.
About Springfield Lake
Springfield Lake has a shoreline of about 5.6 kilometers. The lake is generally around 3 meters deep, but some parts can be as deep as 5 meters. It is a "headwater lake," which means it's at the very beginning of a water system.
Water Flow
The lake is part of the Shubenacadie watershed. This means its water eventually flows into the Bay of Fundy. The ground under the lake is made of a type of rock called pyretic slate. This rock naturally contains hydrogen and sulfur.
Homes and the Lake
Many homes and cottages are built all around the lake's edge. There are over 530 houses in the area that drains into the lake. Homes on streets near the lake have a special system that cleans their wastewater.
Keeping the Water Clean
There is a water treatment plant nearby, built in 1987. This plant helps to clean water from the homes before it goes back into a stream that flows out of the lake. This process helps keep the lake water clean and safe for everyone.
Public Access
You can visit a public beach located at the northwestern end of Springfield Lake. It's a great spot for people to enjoy the water.
