Squires is a small, quiet community located in Douglas County, Missouri, in the United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it's a place where people live and businesses operate, but it doesn't have its own city government like a town or city would. You can find Squires about 9 miles south of a town called Ava. It's right where two roads, Route 5 and Route JJ, meet.

Welcome to Squires, Missouri

Squires is a unique spot in Missouri. It sits at an elevation of about 1,371 feet above sea level. Not far from Squires, there's a fire tower. This tower helps look out for forest fires. It stands even higher, at about 1,517 feet. Another community, Wasola, is about 5 miles to the southeast.

A Look Back: Squires' Early Days

The name Squires comes from an Englishman named John Squire. He wanted to open a post office in his general store. So, in 1889, the Squires post office officially opened. This made "Squires, Missouri" the name for this important crossroads.

Long ago, Squires was a busy place for farmers. Farmers from Arkansas would bring their cattle through here. They would stop and keep their cattle in corrals overnight. This was part of their journey to sell the cattle in Springfield, Missouri. In the late 1800s, many people thought Squires would grow into a much bigger town.

Squires Today: A Community Hub

Even though Squires didn't become a big city, it's still an active community. It has kept its small-town feel for many years. Today, you can find several important places here.

  • Spurlock's Store: This is a very old family business, over a hundred years old!
  • Squires Post Office: It's still open and serving the community.
  • Squires Volunteer Fire Department: This group helps keep everyone safe.
  • Porter's Cafe: A place where people can grab a bite to eat.
  • Porter's Garage: Where people can get their cars fixed.
  • Douglas County Livestock Auction Barn: This is where livestock, like cattle, are bought and sold.

The Fire Lookout Tower nearby is still important. The Missouri Department of Conservation takes care of it. It helps protect the forests from fires.
