St. Andrew's Church is a really old and important church in Newcastle, Maine. It was built way back in 1883. This church is special because it was the first "cottage Gothic Revival" style church in the United States. It was also the very first building designed in the U.S. by a famous English architect named Henry Vaughan. Because of its history and unique design, St. Andrew's Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This list helps protect important historical places across the country.

What Does St. Andrew's Church Look Like?

St. Andrew's Church is located in the main part of Newcastle, close to the Damariscotta River. It's a one-story building made of wood, with a sloped roof and a strong brick base. The outside walls have a cool design with half-timbered stucco, which means parts of the wood frame show through the plaster. The roof is covered with wooden shingles.

Near the back of the church, there's a tower with a pointed roof. The main entrance is on one of the long sides of the building. It has a small, gabled porch that covers the doorway.

The History of St. Andrew's Church

This beautiful church was designed by Henry Vaughan and finished in 1883. Vaughan had just moved to the United States in 1881. St. Andrew's was his first church design here, and it was the start of many important buildings he would create.

Henry Vaughan became a very important architect for the Gothic Revival style in the United States. He even helped design the famous Washington National Cathedral! The land for St. Andrew's Church was given by the Glidden family, and a man named William Glidden helped build it.

Something interesting happened in 1908. A big fire destroyed much of downtown Newcastle. The church's parish house (a building next to the church) was used to help out. It became a temporary home for the Newcastle National Bank while the town rebuilt!
