St. Andrew's Church is a very old and important church located at 11 Glidden Street in Newcastle, Maine. It is an Episcopal church, which is a type of Christian church. This special building was built in 1883. It was the first church in the United States to be designed in a style called "cottage Gothic Revival."

The church was also the first building in the U.S. designed by a famous English architect named Henry Vaughan. He was a big supporter of the Gothic Revival style. Because of its unique design and history, St. Andrew's Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it is recognized as a very important historical site.

Discovering St. Andrew's Church

St. Andrew's Church stands in the main part of Newcastle village. You can find it on the east side of Glidden Street. It is just north of United States Route 1 and west of the Damariscotta River. The church is a single-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and a strong brick foundation.

Unique Architectural Style

The outside walls of the church are covered with a mix of half-timbered wood and stucco. The roof is made of wooden shingles. A tall tower rises near the back of the church. This tower has a pyramid-shaped roof with edges that curve outwards. There are also smaller roof sections that extend from the main roof, lining up with the tower.

The main entrance to the church is on one of its long sides. A small, gabled porch covers this entrance. These details make the church look like a charming cottage, but with grand Gothic features.

The History of St. Andrew's Church

The famous architect Henry Vaughan designed St. Andrew's Church. It was built in 1883. Vaughan had moved to the United States in 1881. This church was the very first of many church buildings he designed after arriving.

Henry Vaughan's Legacy

Henry Vaughan became a leading expert in the Gothic Revival style in the United States. He helped design many important buildings. One of his most famous contributions was to the Washington National Cathedral. This shows how important his work was.

The land for St. Andrew's Church was given by the Glidden family. A person named William Glidden helped build the church. In 1908, a big fire destroyed much of downtown Newcastle. The church's parish house, which is a building next to the church, was used to help. It temporarily housed the Newcastle National Bank after the fire.
