St. Anne's Episcopal Church is a very old and special church located at 29 Church Street in Calais, Maine. It was built in 1853. This church is a great example of a building style called Carpenter Gothic. It's also unique because it's the only building in Maine known to be designed by a famous architect named James Renwick Jr.. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's an important historical building. It is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine.

About the Church Building
St. Anne's Church is in the middle of Calais. It sits at the corner of Church and Washington Streets. The church is made of wood and has one main floor. It has a pointed roof, which is called a gable roof. The outside walls are covered with a special type of siding called board-and-batten. The building rests on a strong foundation made of granite.
Outside Features
The front of the church faces Church Street. On the right side, there is a tall tower with four sections. On the left, there is a smaller tower with two sections and an open area for bells. The main entrance to the church is in the bottom part of the tall tower. Higher up, this tower has a narrow, pointed window. Above that is the main bell area, which has openings for the sound to come out. The very top section of the tower has a large clock. The tower is finished with a decorative railing and small pointed tops called pinnacles. The main part of the church has a large, beautiful stained-glass window with four parts.

The church was built in 1853. It was designed by an architect named James Renwick Jr.. He was a very famous architect.

James Renwick Jr. is best known for designing St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York. This huge and famous cathedral was built between 1858 and 1873. In 1853, when St. Anne's was being built, Renwick was also busy overseeing the construction of the Smithsonian Institution Building. St. Anne's Episcopal Church is the only building in Maine that we know was designed by him.
