The Story of St. Augustine's Church
Why Was the Church Built?
St. Augustine's Church was built in 1972. It was needed because the area of Whitchurch in south Bristol, England, was growing. More people were moving there, and they needed a place to worship.
Why Did the Church Close?
Sadly, St. Augustine's Church had problems almost from the start.
- The bell tower was not safe and had to be taken down in the 1980s.
- Rainwater got inside the roof after some lead was stolen.
- Because of these issues, the church was considered unsafe in 2007 and had to close its doors.
Building a New Church
After the old church closed, the people who attended it hoped to build a new one. They wanted to raise about £50,000 to help with the total cost of £350,000.
Construction work on the new church building finished in 2016. In 2021, Reverend Sam Sheppard became the new priest in charge. He now leads the team for both St. Augustine's Whitchurch and Christ Church Hengrove.
