Building History and Design
Work on St. Cecilia Cathedral began in 1905. It was officially opened in 1959. The famous architect Thomas Rogers Kimball designed this beautiful building. When it was completed, it was one of the ten biggest cathedrals in the whole country. The cathedral is about 255 feet (78 meters) long, 158 feet (48 meters) wide, and 222 feet (68 meters) tall. That's really big!
Unique Architectural Style
The building's style is called Spanish Renaissance Revival. This is different from the European Gothic style that was popular for churches in the early 1900s. Kimball chose this style because Spain and Mexico had a big influence on the region a long time ago. This area was once part of a missionary zone connected to the church in Santiago de Cuba.
A Missing Painting
In 2007, a large painting called The Virgin Immaculata was reported missing from the cathedral. It was a very valuable piece of art, about 8 feet by 5 feet in size. This painting was part of a collection given to the cathedral in 2002.
The Cathedral Organ
The pipe organ inside St. Cecilia Cathedral is very special. It was built by Pasi Organ Builders and first played in 2003. This amazing instrument has 55 different sounds, called "stops." It also has three keyboards for the hands and pedals for the feet. A cool thing about this organ is that many of its stops can be tuned in different ways. This allows the organ to make unique sounds for different kinds of music.
