St. Denis is a small community located in Baltimore County, Maryland, in the United States. It is not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's an unincorporated community, meaning it's part of a larger area, in this case, Arbutus, just south of the city of Baltimore. St. Denis is well-known for its important spot along a major railway line.

Discovering St. Denis, Maryland

Where is St. Denis Located?

St. Denis is found in the central part of Maryland. It sits in Baltimore County, which is one of the many counties in the state. The community is very close to the city of Baltimore, making it easy to reach larger areas. Its location has always been important because of the railway lines that pass through it.

A Hub for Trains

St. Denis is located on the main railway line operated by CSX, a large freight railroad company. This line connects many places and is very busy. The community is situated between two other places, Halethorpe and Relay. Relay is famous for the Thomas Viaduct, a very old and impressive stone bridge built for trains.

St. Denis is also a stop for the MARC Train, which is a commuter rail service. This means people can use the train to travel to and from work or school in nearby cities. The St. Denis stop is on the Camden line of the MARC Train.

The St. Denis Train Station

For many years, St. Denis had a train station building. This station was built in 1891 and looked similar to another station in Germantown. Sadly, the station building was destroyed by a fire in 1976. Today, only the platforms remain where people wait to catch the train.

In 2006, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), which runs the MARC Train, thought about closing the St. Denis stop. However, the Maryland General Assembly, which is the state's law-making body, passed a law to keep the stop open. This shows how important the St. Denis station is to the people who live there.

St. Denis and Halethorpe Stations

It's interesting to know that the Halethorpe MARC station is on a different railway line than the St. Denis station. The St. Denis station is on what used to be the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line. The Halethorpe station, however, is on what was once the Pennsylvania Railroad line. Even though they are close, they are part of different historic railway systems.
