A Look Back: Church History
How St. James' Church Started
The church started a long time ago, in 1890. It began as a small group called St. Andrews Mission. They received help from All Saints Episcopal Church in nearby Pasadena.
In 1905, a temporary building was put up. This was on the corner of Monterey Road and Fremont Avenue. The church you see today was later built in the same spot.
The Church Building
Design and Style
The historic church building was designed by a famous architect named Bertram Goodhue. He worked with a firm called Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson. The church mixes two old styles of architecture: Gothic Revival and Romanesque Revival.
St. James' Church is so important that it's number 33 on South Pasadena's list of historic landmarks. The beautiful stained glass windows inside were made by Judson Studios.
Building Changes Over Time
In 1919, the church started an addition that cost $3,000. This new part included a stage and dressing rooms. The church's chimes were a gift from a famous aviator named Pancho Barnes. She married Rev. C. Rankin Barnes at the church on January 5, 1921.
The church's tower was damaged in the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake. When the tower was fixed, it was also made stronger to handle future earthquakes. During this repair, the chapel's pillars were made narrower. This helped people sitting in the back see the front of the church better.
Special Events at the Church
Famous Wedding
In 1929, the church was the location for a very famous wedding. Actress Bessie Love married William Hawks there. Many celebrities, like Ronald Colman and William Powell, attended the wedding. A huge crowd of 25,000 people gathered outside! The event was even written about in Cecil Beaton's Diaries.
