The St. James and Our Lady of the Pillar Cathedral is found in the city of Bata. This city is in the Litoral province, which is on the mainland part of Equatorial Guinea. The cathedral was officially opened in 1954. It is the main church for the Diocese of Bata. The bishop who leads this diocese is Juan Matogo Oyana.
Design and Construction
The cathedral's design is called neo-Gothic. This means it looks like the old Gothic churches from many centuries ago, with tall arches and detailed decorations. Several missionaries helped design this impressive building. Work on the cathedral started in 1951. It was finished on December 8, 1954. This was during the time when Spain ruled Equatorial Guinea.
Renovations and Importance
In the year 2000, the cathedral began to be renovated. The government of Equatorial Guinea helped with this project. The renovation work was completed in 2005, making the cathedral even more beautiful. Because of its long history and special architecture, the cathedral is considered a national heritage monument.
