St. John's Episcopal Church is a historic church located in Highgate Falls, Vermont. It stands on the village green. This church was built between 1829 and 1830. It is a great example of the Federal style of architecture, with some Gothic Revival features. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 3, 1976.
Church Design and History
St. John's Episcopal Church is a single-story building made of brick. It has a pointed roof. The front of the church has three sections. The middle section sticks out a bit and has a pointed roof too.
The main entrance has double doors. Above the doors, there is a round window that looks like a fan. Above that, there is a large window with three parts, and the middle part is arched. In the pointed part of the front section, there is a round, louvered fan design.
A square tower rises from the roof, right where the main roof meets the front section. The first part of the tower has a round panel. The second part is an eight-sided bell tower with openings for sound.
Building the Church
Joel Whitney, from Enosburg, built the church between 1829 and 1830. It was officially opened on May 21, 1834. The ceremony was led by John Henry Hopkins. He was the first bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont.
The church's design is similar to plans found in a book called The Country Builder's Assistant. This book was written by Asher Benjamin and showed designs for Federal style buildings. However, St. John's Church also has some Gothic features added to it.
Church Community Over Time
The church had a full community of members until 1896. After that, it became part of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Swanton. The current leader of the church community is the Reverend John R. Spainhour.
