St. John Catholic Church is a beautiful old church building. You can find it on St. John Street in a quiet area called St. John Plantation, Maine. This church was built a long time ago, between 1909 and 1911. It's a great example of a building made in the Colonial Revival style, which was popular back then. Even though it's in a rural area, it has many fancy details. Because of its history and design, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
Since 2007, the church has been cared for by the St. John Vianney parish. This group is based in Fort Kent and is part of the Diocese of Portland. Before that, it was part of the St. Louis parish.
What the Church Looks Like
St. John Catholic Church is located on the north side of St. John Street. This street is the main road through the small community of St. John Plantation in northern Maine. The church sits between the road and the Saint John River. It's about half a mile (0.8 km) west of the town's main offices.
The church is made of wood and has one story. It has a gable roof, which means the roof slopes down on two sides, forming a triangle at the ends. A tall tower sticks out a little from the front of the church. The front of the church has three sections. The two outer sections have narrow windows with rounded tops.
The Front Entrance and Tower
The main door is at the bottom of the tower. It has a rounded portico, which is like a covered porch. Above the door, there's a large round window called a transom. Higher up on the tower, there's a big window with fifteen small panes of glass, also topped with a round transom.
The first part of the tower ends with a decorative edge called a cornice. Above this, there's a belfry, which is where the church bells would be. Each side of the belfry has two rounded openings with slats, letting sound out. The belfry also has a cornice on top. Then, there's an eight-sided cap made of lead, and on top of that, a golden cross acts as a spire.
Inside the Church
The inside of St. John Catholic Church is very fancy. It has lots of beautiful woodwork, smooth plaster, and decorative pressed tin. Local builders created this church between 1909 and 1911. They built it for the French Catholic people living in the area. The inside of this church looks similar to the St. David Catholic Church in nearby Madawaska. That church was built in 1872 and was one of the oldest churches in the region.
