St. Joseph's Catholic Church is a historic church located at 1012 French Street in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. It is a special place known for its connection to the Black Catholic community. This church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. This means it's recognized as an important historical site in the United States.
A Church with a Rich History
St. Joseph's Church was first started by a group called the Josephites. They began helping the African-American community in Wilmington in the late 1880s. The Josephites offered many important services to the community.
Later, another religious group, the Franciscans, took over running the church. In the fall of 2020, the church's administration changed again. The Diocese of Wilmington became responsible for the church.
The Church Building
The church building you see today was built in 1947. It replaced an older church and rectory (the priest's home) that were sadly destroyed by a fire in 1945.
Design and Style
The current church is a brick and cast stone building. It has a special design style called late Gothic Revival. This style often includes pointed arches and tall windows, similar to old European cathedrals.
The rectory is also made of brick and cast stone. It was built a few years later, in 1954. A small, one-story hallway connects the rectory to the main church building.
