St. Joseph's Catholic Church is an important church located at 1012 French Street in Wilmington, Delaware. It has a special history, especially for the African-American community in Wilmington. This church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. This means it's recognized as a significant historical place in the United States.
The Church's Story
St. Joseph's Catholic Church has a long and interesting history. It was started by a group called the Josephites. These priests and brothers began helping the African-American community in Wilmington way back in the late 1880s. They offered many services to support the community.
Later, another group of religious people, the Franciscans, took over running the church. They managed St. Joseph's for many years. In the fall of 2020, the church's management changed again. The Diocese of Wilmington took over its administration.
About the Church Building
The church building you see today is not the original one. The first church and its rectory (where the priests live) were sadly destroyed by a fire in 1945.
The current church was built in 1947. It's made of brick and cast stone. The building has a special look called the late Gothic Revival style. This style often includes pointed arches and tall windows, like old European cathedrals.
Next to the church is the rectory, built in 1954. It's also made of brick and cast stone. A small connecting hallway links the church and the rectory together.
