St. Luke's Episcopal Church is a very old and important church building. It is located in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. This church is a special historical place.

A Look at St. Luke's Church

St. Luke's Church is built in a style called Ruskinian Gothic. This style uses natural materials and detailed designs. The church building looks like a Latin Cross from above. This means it has a long main part with shorter parts sticking out on the sides.

Building Materials and Size

The church is made from local stones. These include bluestone and sandstone. Bluestone is a strong, bluish-gray stone. Sandstone is a type of rock made from sand.

The church is quite large. It is about 116 feet long and 75 feet wide. It also has a tall, square tower. This tower is about 85 feet high. On top of the tower, there is a smaller, eight-sided turret. The roof of the church is covered with blue and red slate tiles. Slate is a smooth, flat rock often used for roofs.

The Story of St. Luke's Church

The idea for St. Luke's Church started a long time ago. It was first called "Christ Church, of Lebanon, Pa." in 1859. The church officially joined the Diocese of Pennsylvania that same year. In 1865, its name was changed to "St. Luke's."

How the Church Was Built

The first stone of the church, called the cornerstone, was placed on October 18, 1879. A bishop named Bishop Howe helped with this special event. The church building was finished in 1880.

A famous architect from New York, Henry Martyn Congdon, designed the church. He was known for his beautiful church designs. A wealthy man named Robert Habersham Coleman paid for the church. He wanted to build it to remember his wife, J. Lillie Coleman, who had recently passed away.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its unique design and history, St. Luke's Episcopal Church is very important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. Being on this list helps protect the church for future generations.
