St. Luke's Episcopal Church is a very old church building in Fort Madison, Iowa. It was once known as Hope Episcopal Church. This church is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa. It is also a special building within the Park-to-Park Residential Historic District. This district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important historical site in the United States.

The Story of St. Luke's Church

The church community started in 1847. Back then, it was called Hope Episcopal Church. They built the church we see today in 1857. It was made of brick and designed in the Gothic Revival style. This style looks a bit like old castles or cathedrals.

In 1886, the church got a makeover. An architect named Charles A. Dunham from Burlington helped with the new design. Just two years later, in 1888, electric lights were added to the church. This was a big deal at the time!

A rectory was built from 1889 to 1890. This was a house for the church's priest to live in. Sadly, this rectory was taken down around 1958.

The choir room inside the church was made bigger in 1896. It was opened up to the main worship area, called the sanctuary. In 1905, the church community decided to change their name. They became St. Luke's, which is what it's called today.

More changes happened in 1925. The floor of the sanctuary was made lower. Other parts of the church were also updated. From 1928 to 1929, a new building called the parish house was added. It was built at the back of the church. Robin Carswell, an architect from Fort Madison, designed it. Alhen Brothers contractors built it.

The church had another big renovation in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Finally, in 1966, an office was added to the church building.
