History of St. Mark's Church
Early Beginnings
St. Mark's Church is the oldest church in Palatka. It was started way back in 1853. The church building you see today was built in 1854. It's made in a style called Carpenter Gothic. This style uses wood to look like grand stone churches. It has special wooden boards on the outside and strong corner supports.
One of the people who helped start St. Mark's was William D. Moseley. He was the very first governor of Florida! In the early days, church services only happened in the winter. Visiting priests from northern states would lead them.
During the Civil War
The American Civil War was a tough time for the church. Soldiers from the Union Army used the church building. They caused a lot of damage to it. After the war ended, the church was repaired and reopened. By 1873, it became a full parish. This meant it had its own permanent priest and a strong community.
