St. Mary's Church is a beautiful Roman Catholic church located at 41 Western Avenue in Augusta, Maine. It was built in 1926 and is known for its amazing Gothic Revival style. This means it looks like old European churches from the Middle Ages. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 because it is an important historical building.

What Makes St. Mary's Church Special?
St. Mary's Church stands on the north side of Western Avenue. It is southwest of downtown Augusta. It is also north of the state capitol building. The church is made from strong, cut granite stones called ashlar. It has a long main hall, called a nave, which points away from the street. The roof is very steep and pointed.
Looking at the Outside
When you look at the front of the church, you will see some parts that stick out. On the left, there is a small entrance area. On the right, there is a tall main tower. The main entrance is in the middle of the front. It has a fancy, arched opening that looks like a pointed arch. There are also strong supports called buttresses and small, pointed decorations called pinnacles at the corners. The main tower is also very decorative. It has a pointed roof and a tall, thin steeple reaching high into the sky.
Inside the Church
The inside of St. Mary's Church has stayed mostly the same since it was built. This means you can still see many of the original designs and features from almost 100 years ago.
A Brief History of St. Mary's Church
St. Mary's Church was built between 1926 and 1927. It was needed because more and more Roman Catholic people were moving to Augusta. This church was actually the third main building for a church community that started way back in 1830.
Who Designed the Church?
The church was designed by a famous architectural company from Boston called O'Connell & Shaw. One of the main architects, Timothy G. O'Connell, was well-known for designing many Roman Catholic churches and schools in Maine.
St. Mary's Today
In 2007, St. Mary's Church joined with four other churches. They all became one big church community called St. Michael's Parish. St. Mary's Church is still used today as one of the churches for this large parish.
