Discovering St. Mary's History

Early Settlers and Their Journey

St. Mary's was first settled in 1856. The first families to arrive here came all the way from Stommeln, a town in Germany. Stommeln is located northwest of Cologne, in a region called North Rhine-Westphalia. These brave families traveled across the ocean to start a new life in America.

Growth and New Beginnings

The families who settled in St. Mary's thrived and grew. As time went on, many of their descendants moved to other states. They spread out to places like Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, and California. Some also moved to other counties within Wisconsin. This shows how the community's roots reached far and wide.

A Beautiful Place Recognized

St. Mary's was once recognized for its natural beauty. Photos of the area were chosen for an official White House pamphlet. This happened when Lady Bird Johnson, the wife of former U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson, was the First Lady. She highlighted St. Mary's as "one of America's most beautiful places."
