St. Mary's-By-The-Sea is an old church located at 20 South Shore Road in Northeast Harbor, Maine. It was built in 1902 and has a special look called the Gothic Revival style. An English architect named Henry Vaughan designed it. This church was one of many summer chapels built around the year 1900. Rich families who spent their summers in the area helped pay for these churches. St. Mary's-By-The-Sea was added to a special list of important places, the National Register of Historic Places, in 2000. The church also helps with services at Saint Jude's Episcopal Church, which is another historic chapel in Seal Harbor.

About St. Mary's-By-The-Sea

St. Mary's-By-The-Sea is on the south side of South Shore Road. It is right across from where South Shore Road meets Kimball Road. The church has a cross shape when you look at it from above. It is made from stone and a type of plaster called stucco. The longest part of the church runs parallel to the road.

Church Design and Features

This church shows many features of the Late Gothic style. It has strong supports called buttresses along its main part, known as the nave. There are also buttresses at the corners of the side sections, called transepts. A tower with a jagged top, like a castle, stands in the middle where the main parts of the church meet.

The roof over the nave is raised, and it has windows with pointed arches. These windows, called clerestory windows, let light into the church. Inside, you can see many beautiful stained-glass windows. Some of these windows might even be older than the church itself.

History of the Church

St. Mary's-By-The-Sea is one of only three churches in Maine designed by the English architect Henry Vaughan. It is also the only one of his churches in Maine built entirely of stone.

Why a New Church Was Built

The church was built in 1902 because the old chapel was too small for the growing number of people who attended services in the summer. The community decided to lower a roadbed, and the granite stones from that project were used to help build the new church. Wealthy summer residents raised money to pay for the construction. They did this by asking people to donate, which is called raising money by subscription.
