Northeast Harbor is a charming village located on Mount Desert Island in Maine, United States. It's part of the larger town of Mount Desert in Hancock County.
This village is a very popular spot, especially during the summer months. Many people, including famous families like the Rockefellers, enjoy spending their summers here. It was once so popular with people from Philadelphia that some even called it "Philadelphia on the rocks"!

A Look Back: Northeast Harbor's Story
The first people to settle in Northeast Harbor, the Somes and Richardson families, arrived around 1761.
A well-known landmark in the village is the Asticou Inn. This inn was built by Augustus Chase ("A.C.") Savage, whose family moved to Northeast Harbor in 1792.
Over the years, the village has faced some challenges. In 1966, a fire destroyed several businesses, including a garage, a movie theater, a market, and a sandwich shop. Later, in 2008, another fire on Main Street destroyed a deli and two art galleries. Just five months later, in 2009, a restaurant and apartments were also lost to a fire. As of 2022, some of these buildings are still being rebuilt.
Because of these changes and a decrease in the number of people living there all year, a group called MD365 was started. This group is working to create affordable homes and other ways to encourage new businesses and residents to come to Northeast Harbor.

Northeast Harbor offers many enjoyable activities and places to visit, especially during the warmer months.
The Marina is a busy place in the summer, filled with hundreds of yachts. It offers great views of the cove.
Main Street is the heart of the village, where you can find a variety of shops and restaurants to explore.
