In 1978, Barbara Bel Geddes was the first actor chosen for the TV series Dallas. Her role as Miss Ellie Ewing, the kind and strong mother of the family, made her famous around the world.

She appeared in almost every season of the show, in a total of 276 episodes from 1978 to 1990. She is the only Dallas cast member to win both an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for her role. In 1985, she also won Germany's Golden Camera Award.

In 1979, Barbara had surgery for breast cancer. She bravely used this experience in her role as Miss Ellie during the 1979–1980 season of Dallas. This performance helped her win the Emmy Award. She was also honored by former First Lady Betty Ford for helping people learn more about breast cancer.

In 1983, Barbara had a serious heart issue that required heart surgery. Because of this, she missed some episodes of Dallas and another actress filled in for a season. However, her health improved, and she returned to play Miss Ellie in 1985. She continued in the role until 1990.

He also mentioned that Miss Ellie was often talked about in the new show, especially in connection with the family ranch, Southfork.
