St. Mary's Church is a beautiful Roman Catholic church in Augusta, Maine. It was built in 1926. This church is a great example of Gothic Revival architecture. This style looks like buildings from the Middle Ages. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This means it is an important historical building.
About St. Mary's Church
St. Mary's Church is on Western Avenue in Augusta. It is southwest of the city center. The church is also north of the state capitol building.
What the Church Looks Like
The church is made from large, cut granite stones. It has one main floor. The long main part of the church, called the nave, points away from the street. It has a roof that slopes steeply.
Near the front, there are parts that stick out. On the left is a small entrance area. On the right is a tall main tower. The front door is in the middle of the nave. It has a fancy, pointed arch opening. There are also strong supports called buttresses. Small, pointed decorations called pinnacles are at the corners. The main tower is also very fancy. It has a gabled roof and a tall, pointed steeple on top. The inside of the church still looks much like it did when it was built.
History of the Church
St. Mary's Church was built between 1926 and 1927. It was needed because more Roman Catholic people were moving to Augusta. This church was the third building for a church group that started in 1830.
The church was designed by a company called O'Connell & Shaw. They were architects from Boston. Timothy G. O'Connell, one of the architects, was well-known. He had designed many Catholic churches and schools in Maine. In 2007, St. Mary's Church joined with four other churches. They formed a bigger group called St. Michael's Parish. St. Mary's Church is still used by this parish today.
