History of Saint Michael
Saint Michael got its name from the archangel Michael. An archangel is a very important angel in some religions. A group of Catholic nuns started a "mission" in this area. A mission is like a special center where religious people live and work to help the local community.
This area is home to the Dakota people, and Saint Michael is part of their Spirit Lake Reservation. People from Europe started settling here as early as 1874. A post office was opened in 1932, and it is still open today, helping people send and receive mail.
