St. Patrick's Island Park facts for kids
St. Patrick's Island Park (or just St. Patrick's Island) is a fun 31-acre public park in Calgary, Canada. It's on an island where two rivers, the Bow and the Elbow, meet. This special island is just northeast of Downtown Calgary.
St. Patrick's Island is one of Calgary's oldest parks. It started becoming a public space in the 1890s. Building a bridge to the island in the early 1900s made it an even more important place for people in the city. Over many years, the island changed a lot. It was a campground in the 1960s. For a long time, from the 1980s to the 2000s, it wasn't used much and had some people living there unofficially.
For several decades, the island was connected to the East Village area by an old steel and wooden bridge. But in the late 2000s, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation started to make the East Village much better. They especially wanted to turn St. Patrick's Island into a great city park. Their plan included fun activities and ways for people to get close to the Bow River. After years of building, the new St. Patrick's Island Park opened in July 2015. A new bridge, the George C. King Bridge, also opened. This bridge connects the island park to both the East Village in the south and Bridgeland in the north.
